Alman yazar ve şair Wolfgang Borchert'in 1946'da yazdığı Ekmek (Das Brot) yiyeceğin kıt olduğu savaş sonrası Almanyası'nda geçmektedir. 

Almanya'daki II. Dünya Savaşı'ndan kısa bir süre sonra, yaşlı bir kadın gecenin karanlığına uyanır. Mutfakta karne ekmeğinden fazladan bir dilim yiyen kocasını yakalar. Aralarında şaşkın bir diyalog gerçekleşir. Diyaloğun sonunda hiçbir şeyin olmadığı kanaatine varırlar. Rüzgar ve yağmur oluğu sesine uyanan karı koca yatağa geri dönerler. Kadın uyumaya çalışırlarken, kocasının gizlice ekmek yediğini duyar. Ertesi akşam yemek hazırlayan kadın, kocasının önüne fazladan ekmek koyar. Midesinin o ekmeği kaldırmadığını bahane eder, ardından masaya oturur. 

The Bread (Das Brot) which was written by the German writer and poet Wolfgang Borchert in 1946, takes place in post-war Germany where food was scarce.

Shortly after World War II in Germany, an old woman awakens into the darkness of the night. She catches her husband when he has another extra slice of ration bread in the kitchen. An astonishing dialogue takes place between them. At the end of the dialogue, they come to the conclusion that nothing happened. Awakened to the sound of wind and rain gutters, the husband and wife return to bed. While the woman is trying to sleep, she hears her husband is eating bread secretly. The next evening, the woman who prepares the meal puts extra bread in front of her husband. She makes excuses that her stomach can't take that bread, then sits at the table.
